Don’t cry for Conservatives, cry for Canada. No matter who wins this acidic power struggle, democracy and the national interest lose.
With trust shattered and co-operation stillborn, a 7-week-old Parliament is in ruins. Eventually it will be replaced, but already missed is the opportunity for politicians to rise to the demanding occasion of the most threatening financial collapse since the Great Depression.
Stephen Harper missed it first by plunging into gutter politics while the country looked to Ottawa for higher purpose. Now Liberals are taking their turn by putting forward Stéphane Dion, rejected by voters just seven weeks ago, to lead a country desperate for strong yet accommodating leadership.
Canada should abandon the notion of minority government. Whatever party wins in an election should be the government party.

根據我本macro textbook (macroeconomics third Canadian edition),馬田做財長時就係靠fiscal contraction(decrease in government spending and increase in taxes)嚟還債，呢樣阿鬼都識啦。

Hunger, next time u open ur mouth, please do ur homework and check ur stats. Go check the poll on Omni last nite. Go do ur own survey on mainstream. Liberal voters are also participating in the rally on Saturday. This is not a Conservative rally. They are calling it ‘democracy rally" all across all mainstream radio stations. U can keep your opinion to urself. It is still a democracy rally and not a conservative rally.

It is very clever for Harper to ask for the prorogue. Super leadership well demonstrated. Apparently he did his research and homework. Traditionally we don’t do much during the holidays anyway; it should do no harm. Let’s wait and see. I just don’t think this should be the place for monopoly.
By: evaleung on 十二月 4, 2008 at 4:44 下午

Stephen Harper should have asked to suspend Parliament for four years.
I have already done my part here. It’s up to them to decide whether they want to continue to live under the rock. And for the die-hard Liberal, do you even have one seat in the parliament from our people? Or do the Liberal even care about YOU?
And for those who are not able to read this anyways, I am doing this here for you, not for me and the Conservative Party. If it takes me painfully 10 times the time to type in Chinese than in English, u wonder why I am killing myself over this.

In contrast to what Harper said, the coalition wasn’t undemocratic. But, it doesn’t mean it has earned the support from the public. Meanwhile, Lyton said Harper has locked the door of the Parliament so the MPs can’t voice and cast their vote of non-confidence to the government, suggesting to the public Harper’s request for prorogue wasn’t democratic. The reality is that Harper acted within the legal boundaries and he had as much right to request for the suspension of the Parliament as the opposition parties to form the coalition government. It’s just a game of politics.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind going to the poll again.

If there is to be no nationwide vote by party members, a caucus vote is the only other option left to find a replacement for Stephane Dion. Dion is expected to resign at a Wednesday caucus meeting, although some Liberals expect he may go as early as Monday.
Under the party constitution, as soon as the leader resigns, the national executive, in consultation with the caucus, can choose an interim leader.
Many Liberals now expect Ignatieff will be chosen Wednesday by caucus as interim leader – to be made permanent by a ratification vote at a previously scheduled May 2 leadership vote.

Jack Layton must resign
None of the other party leaders failed to get the support of at least half of their constituents. Stephen Harper (73.0%), Stéphane Dion (61.7%) and Gilles Duceppe (50.2%) all won their seats democratically. Not so Jack Layton.
Even Jack can’t have it both ways. If the Conservatives are illegitimate because 62.4% of Canadians didn’t vote for them, then Layton is the illegitimate MP for the riding of Toronto-Danforth because 53.2% of voters voted against him. Either getting less than 50% of the votes is sufficient or it’s not. If Jack Layton actually believes that the Harper government must go because a majority of people didn’t vote for them, then he must do the honourable thing and resign his seat in the House of Commons.
Rae also said on Sunday that a closed-door decision by the Liberal caucus and party executives — both of which are top-heavy with Ignatieff supporters — wouldn’t be the right way to choose a permanent leader.
“It can’t simply be a small group of people behind closed doors," he said, adding it would be inappropriate.
All Mr. Dion needs now is to be bitten by his dog, Kyoto, to become the most chronically rejected figure in Canadian politics. He will go down in history as Stephen Harper’s dream rival and his own party’s nightmare.
He devised a carbon-tax platform at odds with the oncoming recession’s energy price collapse, bumbled a television interview at the worst possible moment of the election campaign and, in a final defining image of his hapless leadership, crafted a controversial coalition and produced an amateur-quality video to sell it in a television address, and then, for better or worse, missed the broadcast window.
Shakespeare could not make up a political figure enduring so many multiple tragedies in such short order.
