William F. Buckley Jr. (1925-2008):

“The Last True Conservative": William Buckley’s Legacy

William Buckley Jr.

  4. William F, Buckley, Jr.

    On President Bush:

    1. Bush is conservative, but he is not a conservative.

    2. The president was not elected “as a vessel of the conservative faith."

    On the War in Iraq:

    1. The War in Iraq was “anything but conservative. The reality of the situation is that missions abroad to effect regime change in countries without a bill of rights or democratic tradition are terribly arduous.

    2. One cannot doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed. It’s important that we acknowledge in the inner councils of state that it (the war) has failed, so that we should look for opportunities to cope with that failure.

A political or theological orientation advocating the preservation of the best in society and opposing radical changes.

    • A resurgence of economic and political beliefs associated with classical liberalism of the early 19th century.

    • Neoconservatism is a political movement, mainly in the United States, which is generally held to have emerged in the 1960s, coalesced in the 1970s, and has had a significant presence in the administration of George W. Bush.

  11. Some quotes from William F. Buckley Jr.

    • There is an inverse relationship between reliance on the state and self-reliance.

    • The best defense against usurpatory government is an assertive citizenry.

    • One can’t doubt that the American objective in Iraq has failed – different plans have to be made. And the kernel here is the acknowledgement of defeat.

    • Liberals, it has been said, are generous with other peoples’ money, except when it comes to questions of national survival when they prefer to be generous with other people’s freedom and security.

    • Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views.

    • Back in the thirties we were told we must collectivize the nation because the people were so poor. Now we are told we must collectivize the nation because the people are so rich.

  18. The political arena after the World War II was dominated by the United States. After all, the U.S. has been the dominant player in the Western civilization. The influence of her domestic and foreign policies is far more reaching than most of us could realize. Many beliefs like Buckley’s have shaped the directions of the U.S. and subsequently the world’s. Buckley’s influence can not be underestimated.

  19. Unlike most conservatives of earlier generations, neoconservatives maintain that the United States should take an active role in world affairs, though they are generally suspicious of international institutions, such as the United Nations and the World Court, whose authority could intrude upon American sovereignty or limit the country’s freedom to act in its own interests.

And It Works" 嗰隻呢! And It Works" 架。

  23. Why only brown nose this guy after he died? No one mentioned how great he was in all the blog here before he died🙂

I don’t see his influence, if any, regarding the following quote, if the quote is real:
