I think Chinese are just too smart to write any kind of fable. That’s why our 5-thousand-year-old land of the dragon has, by and large, been free of Mickey Mouse lawsuits.
Take Lion King as an example. A classic story such as this with lots of educational value teaching children and grown-ups friendship (Simba, Timon and Pumbaa), power struggle (King Mustafa and his brother Scar), and most of all, the circle of life (why animals need to kill other species to survive) would be slapped with a lawsuit suing Disney of sexism!
How about this one that will probably net a Stella Award (a.k.a. the Stupid Lawsuit Award) – Snow White. The story has been accused of stereotyping old women as being ugly and wicked.
Also, children’s books and fables are now bowing to the growing trend of the Japanese style anime/comic books – Manga – even in the mainstream culture. Ever heard of a child wanting to see Mickey Mouse anymore? Ask an 8-year-old what Donald Duck is and he/she could be scratching his/her head. Ask the same question but change the subject to Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Digimon, or one of those child-knows-what Japanese characters and they’ll be happy to tell you some of these “kids’ stories” with contents of violence (with the bloodiest murder scenes you’ve ever known), pornography, and back stabbing.
I think 兒童文學名著’s probably include those classics with pigs that can talk (e.g. The Three Little Pigs), a sly fox who know how to knock on grandma’s door and lock her up in a closet (i.e. Little Red Riding Hood), or a prince who goes in and kisses on a princess’s cheek without being shot to death on the grounds of breaking and entering or sexual harassment.
Therefore, comics like 兒童樂園，財叔，十三點，老夫子, Superman, Spiderman, X-Men, Flash Gordon, Wonderwoman, etc. shouldn’t count.
霄九里 bro’: Didn’t know 5蚊剪髮’s places had 老夫子 (albeit 黃come come). My 3蚊剪髮’s place I go there every two months or so has only Cosmopolitan featuring stories like: “How to dump your guy in 72 hours". You have to go to TPL’s branches where you can smell curry in and around the branches and where staff are much ruder than those waitresses you see in 聾藤金角, like the Cederbrae Library.
