  1. My condolences go to John Pham, the 10-year-old-boy who got thrown around in the school bus and died late last night (April 11) when the vehicle rolled down a ditch.

The conclusion that installing seat-belts on school buses might injure more children sounds counter-intuitive but, apparently, it’s true, at least when other structures remain unchanged. See:

    http://www.safety-council.org/info/traffic/schbusbelt.htm

Still, it’s hard to imagine that, with all the crash avoidance and body/head restraining technologies we have out there as shown in auto shows around the world, we still have relatively primitive, unprotected, wide-open seats for the youngsters.

I am sure we can do better than that before the next little victim happens to be someone we know.

  2. 校巴設安全帶,咁巴士又點?火車又點?
    司機有冇責任幫或make sure乖客扣上安全帶?
    細路唔扣安全帶,又是誰的責任?唔扣唔開車?

  3. I think most ppl support the installation of seat belts on school buses to reduce the probability of death, serious injury during crashes and rollovers n the use of seat belt also improves passenger behavior n reduces school driver distractions. However, seat belts on a school bus may hinder the evacuation process.

Personally,I do believe school bus is one of the safest form of land transportation available. The number of serious school bus accidents that have fatalities are extremely low and rare ~ It’s actually the drivers of cars around school buses that cause the majority of school bus accidents. Think about it ~ how many times have you sped up and passed a school bus so you wouldn’t have to stop when they put their stop sign out to load/unload kids? How many times have you cut off a school bus becoz you think that the school bus is moving too slow?

School Bus Drivers have a difficult job. I know I wouldn’t wanna do it.

  4. Simon, beware of your perfunctory comments

When you led the discussions about the installation of safety belts in school buses in yesterday’s program, your introductory note is immature if not reckless. You said only idiots would doubt the necessity of installation of safety belts in school buses. Thanks to the entry of 求丙 which provides valuable information that the existing design of safety belts might cause more serious injuries if installed in school buses. The concerns of 慢感人 should not be ignored as well.

  6. Cytodex,

It’s not only me who make postings after mid-night. 慢感人also did it at 4:08a.m. last night.

  7. My point of view is slightly different from most listeners during the show.

I propose to ban School buses from Express-ways, that includes all the 400 series and QEW.
And set a maximum speed limit to 70 km/h.
Put school buses under the direct jurastriction of the Ontario Provincial Police. And if they see drivers following them, during rush hours, it is required to give way to the drivers behind them.

Reasons are simple. First, banning from 400 series etc is actually the most useful. Most School buses doesn’t need to go on a expressway to pick up or drop off children. Only in cases such as this tragedy that school buses are required to travel on an express way, but they can easily do the same thing via local, just that the travel time would require slightly longer.

2nd suggestion, School bus drivers are professional drivers, like TTC’s drivers, there should be a limitation to how fast they can drive while they are behind the wheel. This would increase the safety of the passengers on board.

3rd, Since there is a speed limitation, drivers on the road would be assigned to keep drivers at their legal speed limitation, if they see school buses going faster then it is legally allowed, they are required by their citizen’s obligation to report such violations to the Opp.

Lastly, since school buses are usually active during rush hours there would be thousands of drivers on the road. if drivers attempts to pass a school bus both legal and illegally with the bus driver not giving way, it would create more traffic accidents where it involves school buses and other drivers.

    just my 2cents worth.
