  1. I’m so disappointed with Mr Chan who seems trying to put Chinese community on the “table" to help him gaining the support from other communities.
I really wish Tony can come out and say something!! At least … he chose to keep silent during this critical period, not saying any words for Chan. That means something already!

(Markham) – Conservative flyers have sparked accusations of racial politics in the Markham byelection.
Liberal candidate Michael Chan sent a copy of a Chinese-language flyer to The Economist & Sun that says if residents want the true voice of Markham heard, they should vote for PC candidate Alex Yuan.

According to a translator, the message insinuates Markham residents’ voices are not heard by the current government.

It also refers to former MPP Tony Wong being on the back benches.

Mr. Chan interprets the flyer as implying Chinese-Canadian MPPs don’t get prominent positions in Dalton McGuinty’s government.

“I don’t understand why they are doing this," Mr. Chan said. “Everybody who lives in Markham is Canadian. I’m kind of lost on this one."

But Mr. Yuan said his opponent’s interpretation is totally wrong.

“I feel sad for Ontarians, for Markham residents, because this is a desperate Liberal candidate who has no issues," Mr. Yuan said. “The Liberal candidate is wasting everybody’s time."

He quoted from the English text of a flyer, which also contained the Chinese message.

“When you are a Liberal backbencher, you are told to show up but not speak up," it says.

Mr. Yuan’s campaign manager, Pauline Browse, denied the flyer had anything to do with race.

“The Liberal candidate must be desperate because it’s a complete distortion of the facts," she said.

Mr. Chan said he was frustrated by the tactic.

“We should be talking about health care and gridlock. We have much better issues to talk about than Tony Wong," Mr. Chan said. “Tony, when he was MPP, did a great job."

While Mr. Wong was at the centre of the latest fight between the two parties, he did not return phone calls to his office.

There will be a candidates debate at Seneca College’s Markham campus at 7 p.m. tonight.

  2. will above pls write chinese if hv time
don’t know how to read yr english
    very hard to understand

  3. It’s just a copy of an article … (Economist and Sun)
    http://www.yorkregion.com/yr/yr4/YR_News/Newscentre/Economist_and_Sun/story/3864211p-4470798c.html

I think Tony Wong’s case is not only shame to Chinese community but the whole Markham community!
Cuz Tony was representing Markham! Thanks Mr Chan for reminding us!

  4. And as Chan once said “I contributed alot to this community, but didn’t like to show off my name … that’s why you have never seen my name" … I can imagine how comfortable he will be as a quiet backbencher in Liberal (Tony was not comfortable at all, in contrast). But, do you think he is a true leader in this community? I have never seen a leader who always like to hide his name! haha He is the first one. He always has good debating skill. But, fact is fact. Don’t be a SNAKE!

  6. I wonder why they chose to forward an email by
[1] Print it out [2] go to the fax machine [3] key in the phone number [4] fax it there.
But not just forward an email by pressing the FORWARD button. You can never prove you have faxed it to the right number.

  7. Poor Markham residents. This is what you have to choose between this 2 bad apples?Jo Lee will win in landslide if he is the other candidate. Both pc & liberal have choose the wrong guy.

  8. (1)Hmmm… I’ve missed Joe Lee already. Too bad, his timing was bad. At least, Joe Lee kept his promise to his family not to run again (for the near future).

(2)Again, this CHAN dude is just a joker. What do you mean by “not showing off my name while doing community work". It’s just another example of hypocrisy or stupidity. Politics 101: Politics is about publicity. Only the traditional chinese morality taught you not to show off. You’re just plain stupid if you believe in this kind of crap.

  9. ** Sorry that I have to use English because it would take forever for me to do this in Chinese or…any volunteer to do the translation for me? **

After listening to the debate, the liberals have turned my commotion from upset to simply infuriating! I think the provincial liberals are more than despicably pathetic (or pathetically despicable, whichever you feel more suitable to the occasion).

    To Michael Chan:
    ——————
Like always, Chan blamed all the broken promises about “no new tax increases” on their predecessor – the Tory government of course. Does anyone honestly believe that the Liberals didn’t know the severity of fiscal imbalances or deficits on the books year after year before the election? I could probably believe this kind of lies only if we were living in a communist country and everything just happened behind the iron curtain. Even if I gave McGinty the benefit of a doubt on this, shouldn’t the Liberals have ensured that close to $1,000 of health premium per Ontarian per year would be well spent (e.g. how many percent of waiting time could be slashed) before they raised this tax (oh, sorry, I shouldn’t say tax because it is “only” the health premium or, like Yuan’s use of the word “discrimination”, I might be sued!) and pitched the money in a never-ending greedy black hole?

Regarding the Head Tax, Chan responded that it “has been proven that we now need to compensate the victims, like we anticipated!” My Buddha! Of course the government has to reimburse the victims the fair amount of what they paid almost 100 years ago. It was the unanticipated amounts such as lawsuit settlements and other aftermath that the Liberal party didn’t want to shoulder after apologizing to the Head Tax victims and therefore chose not to officially say, “Gar Na Dai Doe Hip”. Now, it is proven that no such reverberations are happening! Actually, Chan should have distanced the provincial grits from the Feds when the Head Tax questions landed squarely on his shoulders, just like what the Feds did when McGinty started to show the other side of his honest-looking face by breaking his election promises!

By the way, I checked the website alexyuan.com and the first link you see on the page indeed points to Michael Chan’s webpage, although the link does say Alex Yuan on it! The owner of the linked Chan’s page is indeed the Liberal Party but the owner of the page with the link is untraceable.

Frankly, one of the callers was blunt but did hit the bull’s eye. Being a politician, besides being charismatic, the prerequisite is fluency in either or both of Canada’s official languages. Otherwise, how would I expect him/her to articulate all the concerns of his/her constituents to the party and the English public at least in Ontario. In Chan’s case, I don’t see any of these qualities in him.

    To Alex Yuan
    —————
If my memory serves, Yuan expressed that the PC party endorses the idea of extending the 407 ETR further to the east.

After living in Markham for so many years, I have mostly abandoned my car in favour of the bio-fuel and hybrid electric-powered TTC public vehicles. Why do I choose to wait under a bus shelter in sub-zero frigid-cold temperatures instead of comfortably driving in my V6 Camry or my SUV? Reason is simple. I care about my children and ALL the other species around us.

Scarborough and Markham host the largest urban park in North America – The Rouge Park. Wild lives are everywhere, these are some of the species I have seen either while I was waiting for a TTC bus or somewhere in and around these two towns:

    1. Black Bear – strolling along Ninth Line and Highway 7
    2. Blue Heron – near Markham Road and 14th
    3. Deers – near Morningside and Ellesmere, AND…..
    4. Woodpecker – near Bayview and Steeles

Especially the woodpecker, I guess a lot of people know that these birds were thought to be extinct since 1920’s until recent discovery of some of them in Arkansas and Florida.

Extending the 407 to the east means that Rouge River area would be cut off in two sections and thus eliminating the food hunting paths for a lot of animals in that area. Do you honestly think that any environmental assessment would put these wild lives’ welfare as the paramount concern?

I need this answered before the election day before I will confidently cast my vote.

    To Janice Hagan
    ——————-

    First, about Hagan’s name:

I learned yesterday that Hagan had acquired a Chinese name as “Cheng Hei Kun”. Before advertising this “diversity-embracing” name everywhere Hagan goes in the Chinese community, consider this:

Bob Rae’s “official “ Chinese name is Lee Bog, which is correctly named since his last name is Rae (sounds similar to the single syllable “Lee”) and Chinese’s last name should precede the given name.

Jan Hagan’s last name is Hagan, or “Hei Kun”, NOT Cheng – a common Chinese surname. Therefore, your Chinese name should be Hei-Kun Cheng, not Cheng Hei Kun.

If Hagan likes the idea of having “One party, two systems”, go ahead and use “Cheng Hei Kun”. Otherwise, please make up something better.

Second, Hagan’s resistance to extending the Highway 407 eastward:

What is Hagan’s take on dissolving the traffic gridlock that happens everyday in the stretch of 401 between Oshawa and Scarborough, if 407 extension project doesn’t receive the green light?

Oh my god! Read Mingpao today!! … I think it says alot!

  14. Me and my better half will go for Ah Yeun this time for 3 simple reasons; Ah Yeun and the Blues did the following:

    1) 1% GST cut realized
    2) reopened the Same Sex Marriage for debate
    3) Ah Yeun supports traditional family values

Apparently Ah Yuen needs to brush up his political (debate or Cantonese?) skills but we need someone who will speak up his conscious adn follow through, not just “speak" politically correctly.

Yes I missed Joe too but a man keeps his promises.

  19. Tony Wong’s inaction and his wife’s action are pretty interesting. They indirectly support the notion that Wong was ousted/neglected by his party. Well, Tony was “kind" enough not to smear his former boss but his wife was pretty unhappy by his “departure" from provincial arena. Tony does not want to burn bridges especially in the political sense; that’s why he keeps his silence. However, as an independent entity, Tony wife can “voice" her view. Fortunately, it sort of explains a lot of the sour notes on part of Tony. I definitely don’t want this CHAN dude to win but do not have any excitment to see YUAN win as well.

  20. Michael Chan didn’t really get any “endorse" from anyone. If you have a look at his site, most of the quotations are about his party. And lots of them are OLD comments … up to year 2004!!! Do we vote such a liar who use all the methods keep betraying our Markham community (not just Chinese), misleading our audience. And what? He has been here since he was 18? Lots of new immigrants speak better English than him! What a typical insurance broker who only look for easy money and never work for our community. This is too easy for him!!

  21. Comment by Tony Wong supporter — February 5, 2007 #

hey hey hey, lots of chinese they only know little english, you want your idea to get heavest, write in Chinese, write in Chinese, use your brain!

  22. To: “Tony Wong supporter"
    .
First of all, I do not support Michael Chan for this by-election.
    .
I do not know Michael Chan personally and also I do not know how he conducts his business.
    .
However, please do not insult us and paint us with such a broad brush by stating “what a typical insurance broker who only look for easy money and never work for our community."
    .
Yes – there are some “not so good apples out there who only look for easy money". HOWEVER, they are NOT a typical insurance broker.
    .
Again, please take your comment back regarding insurance brokers and refrain from insulting us.
    .
    Thank you.

  26. Until last night, I did not watch any debates by the three major parties for the Markham by-election. There was a debate hosted by Rogers TV. Three candidates addressed a few questions by Markham Mayor and Chair of the Markham Borad of Trade. After the debate finished at 9:00pm, I still could not figure out why McGunity picked Michael to run. His communication skills were very inadequate. Perhaps, McGunity thought he could pick any candidate of Chinese origin and the chinese voters would immediately worship him/her. I am not a support for Michael or Alex but want to critize on the basis of their performance or reports on their campaign. But, I think McGunity probably does not know Michael well enough or worse he (McGunity) thinks less of the Chinese voters as a whole.

  27. If you were at the all candidates debate there was a question where someone from the audience asks, “If Canada were another country, what country would it be most like?"

Michael Chan : “I Love Canada, Canada is my Home…"

I think that says it all.

    (waiting for cytodex to comment)

  31. I have followed this race from the beginning, and I would not vote for either 3 of the candidates.

The campaign that Michael Chan and the Liberals threw together seems a little fishy and his debating skills in English are poor, but Chinese debating skills are good. Seems like a modest man, but too quiet – would be a backbencher for sure. McGuinty isn’t being looked favourably upon for broken promises so that doesn’t help Michael Chan. In all debates and interviews he gets grilled a lot.

For Alex Yuan, most of the time he doesn’t answer the question asked in a debate. He replies with a practiced answer instead. He seems more interested in pushing a personal agenda than what is best for the public. Has the personality of a politician – does not seem trustworthy.

Janice Hagan: Trying to hard to be “in" with the Chinese community to win their votes. She has great politic skills. Unfortunately, against liberal and PC she doesn’t have much of a chance. She is best candidate of them all but after Rae, NDP has left a bad taste in my mouth.

  32. I think that you should look at it this way

Janice Hagan has run for 5 or 6 consecutive elections, so the reason why she might seem so smooth is cause this isn’t anything new to her. Since the first election she has been pushing the same issues, but you have to admire her tenacity , given that NDP will not take that area. Taking part in the Chinese debates should not be looked down on, if anything she is trying to connect with the community, i mean if you were her, do you honestly think you could steal votes from a chinese candidate?

Alex Yuan and Michael Chan are relatively new to the realm of politics.

I’ll agree that Michael Chan doesn’t seem to strong in English, and that could definitely work against him in parliament. However the reason why he seems to be grilled most of the time is because he’s got to stand up to the mistakes and problems that the current government has made.

As for your claims against Alex Yuan, I don’t think you’re listening carefully enough.. If you have been following from the beginning and seen all the debates (chinese and non), (Rogers, First Markham Place, Radio, All-Candidates Meetings) ALL the candidates have not answered questions. This is a tactic they all use to not make any promises they can’t keep… that being said.. does this make a person more honest?

  33. To RED STREAK:

In response to your “interesting" note on Michael’s response in the all candidates campaign, I would recommend Michael or any future Liberal candidates to do the following:

    (1) Solemnly stand up
    (2) Sing our National Anthem

    O Canada!
    Our home and native land!
    ….

    ..
    .

    (3) Then, declare “Canada is my home, I will not emigrate to another country".
    (4) Use the greatest efforts to come up with tears in the eyes.
    (5) Sit down quietly.

    Cheers!

  34. To 人:

Pretty good analyses on the liberal and PC candidates. No doubt, it is very hard to decide who to vote for. Assuming Michael lost this by-election (which is very likely given the odds), would McGuinty still pick Michael up again in the fall for the real “test"?

Everybody knows that this by-election is not too critical. What matters is the real campaign a few months from now. That’s why McGunity was not too serious about it.

If McGunity did not pick up Michael again, then it explains my thesis that Michael is just a substitute for now. The real battle will be fought again in the fall. What gives McGunity more trouble is if Michael wins this by-election, McGuinty could not easily sack Michael in favor of another candidate (the one he actually likes). Too bad, Michael seems to be set up by his own party.
